Shosenkyo Gorge

Japanese:
Shosenkyo Gorge

A gorge along the upper reaches of the Arakawa River (a tributary of the Fuefuki River) that straddles the cities of Kofu and Kai in Yamanashi Prefecture. It is commonly known as Shosenkyo, but its official name is Mitake Shosenkyo (often written as "Mitake Shosenkyo"). The Arakawa River, which originates in Mount Kinpu and Mount Kokushigatake in the Chichibu Mountains, crosses a granite area, and in the 5 km stretch from Sengataki Falls at an altitude of 680 meters to Nagatoro Bridge at an altitude of 460 meters, the granite has been eroded, and strange rocks such as Kakuenmine, Tengu Rock, Jinmen Rock, Toryu Rock, and Saru Rock, as well as many potholes and columnar joints of pyroxene andesite intruded into the cracks of the granite can be seen. At the same time, there are many waterfalls, rapids, and streams, and the scenery is magnificent when the new green leaves come out and the leaves change color. It was selected as the number one valley in the Mainichi Newspaper's 100 Best Places of Scenic Beauty in Japan in 1950, and became widely known. It was designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty by the national government in 1953. There is a promenade along the valley, an improved version of the Mitake Shindo trail from the Edo period, and there are also horse-drawn carriage rides. There is a regular bus service from Kofu, and the Green Line Shosenkyo (road) has been developed. It is common to travel to and from Sengataki Falls from Chotanbashi Bridge downstream, or from Rakanjiri, but there are also hiking trails in the surrounding area. There is also a ropeway from Sengataki Station to Panoramadai. The entire area is within Chichibu Tama Kai National Park.
