A marine animal belonging to the phylum Cnidaria, class Anthozoa, subclass Hexacorallia, order Actiniaria, family Actiniidae. It is also called the red sea anemone. It is distributed from the temperate to cold zones of the Northern Hemisphere and lives in the intertidal zone. Its body is 2-4 cm in height and diameter. The body wall is deep red, and the oral disc, foot disc, and tentacles are pale pink. The body wall is smooth and has no appendages. The upper end of the body wall is collar-shaped and continues to the tentacles, but behind this is a blue peripheral ball. There are 96 tentacles in 5 rows. The foot disc has well-developed muscles that attach it to the rock surface. There are 48 pairs of diaphragms in 4 rows, and they cannot be clearly divided into large and small diaphragms. The 12 pairs in the first 2 rows are complete diaphragms. The perioral muscles are endodermal, but are diffuse and poorly developed. Part of the septum in the stomach cavity breaks off and the asexual juveniles emerge. They grow in the mother's stomach cavity until they become juvenile sea anemones, after which they are expelled from the mother's mouth.

刺胞(しほう)動物門花虫(はなむし)綱六放サンゴ亜綱イソギンチャク目ウメボシイソギンチャク科に属する海産動物。アカイソギンチャクともよばれる。北半球の温帯から寒帯に分布し、潮間帯に生息する。体は高さと径がともに2～4センチメートル。体壁は濃紅色で、口盤、足盤、触手は淡紅色を帯びる。体壁は滑らかで付属物はない。体壁の上端は襟状で触手に続くが、この奥に青色の周辺球がある。触手は5環列で96本ある。足盤は筋肉が発達し、これで岩面に付着している。隔膜は4環列で48対、大隔膜と小隔膜とに判然と分けることはできない。最初の2環列の12対は完全隔膜となる。周口筋は内胚葉(ないはいよう)性であるが、拡散型で発達は悪い。胃腔(いこう)内の隔膜の一部がちぎれて無性的に幼体となり、稚イソギンチャクになるまで母体の胃腔の中で育ち、その後、母体の口より吐き出される。
