…Losing his mother at the age of 14, he converted to Catholicism amid religious anxiety. After World War I, he studied at the University of Virginia, and began writing after returning to Japan. He established himself in the literary world with novels such as Adrienne Majora (1927) and Leviathan (1929), depicting the anxiety, agony, and madness of lonely people, and then established a fantastical and mystical style with works such as The Vision Chaser (1934) and Midnight (1936). He went into exile in the United States during World War II, but after returning to Japan, he deepened his Catholic faith and published works such as Moira (1950) and The Other (1971). …
