Hong Gai - Hong Gai (English spelling)

The capital of Quang Ninh Province in northern Vietnam. Also called Hon Gai or Ha Long. Population 144,300 (2003 estimate). Known as the source and shipping port of world-famous Hon Gai coal (anthracite). Mining began by the Chinese around 1865, but the mining area is large, stretching 130 km from Dong Chu in the west to Ke Bao Island in the east, 15-20 km wide, covering an area of ​​160,000 hectares, with reserves of more than 1.2 billion tons. A coal-based petrochemical complex has been built in the port. The bay of the same name is the name for the northern part of Ha Long Bay, part of Bac Bo (Tonkin) Bay.

ベトナム北部、クアンニン省の省都。ホンガイ、ハロンとも称する。人口14万4300（2003推計）。世界的に有名なホンゲイ炭（無煙炭）の産出地およびその積出し港として知られる。採掘は1865年ごろ中国人によって始められたが、鉱区は広く、西はドンチューから東はケバオ島まで延長130キロメートル、幅15～20キロメートル、面積は16万ヘクタール、埋蔵量は12億トン以上といわれる。港には石炭を原料とするコンビナートがつくられている。なお、同名の湾は、バクボ（トンキン）湾の一部のハロン湾北部の呼称である。
