In England, a town house is the main residence of the nobility or wealthy country gentry on their country estates (compared to the town house, which was used for staying in London during the social season or when Parliament was in session). Originally manor houses were the residences of landowners in the Middle Ages, but with the accumulation of wealth and the remarkable development of architectural techniques during the Tudor dynasty in the 16th century, construction of grand country houses comparable to palaces in other countries became popular. This trend continued into the 18th century, leaving behind magnificent buildings all over England. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
