Salary increase system - shokyuuseido

Japanese: 昇給制度 - しょうきゅうせいど

Although it can refer to a system in which wages are increased with promotions or salary increases (commonly known as base-ups), in technical terms it is distinguished from this and strictly refers to a system in which basic wages are increased so that wages are differentiated for each individual according to a certain standard. The certain standard here refers to the method of setting the rate of salary increases, which is created differently for each company, in order to assess attendance rates over a certain period of time (usually the past year), skills, proficiency, necessary knowledge, and the degree to which abilities are demonstrated. It is a Japanese characteristic that wages increase every year even if the job type does not change because of the salary increase system, but the part of the salary increase that increases regardless of work performance is called an automatic salary increase (or a living salary increase as a minimum guarantee), and the part added to this is called an assessed salary increase.

昇進や給与引上げ(俗にベースアップという)に伴って給与を増やす制度を指すこともあるが，専門用語ではこれと区別し，厳格に〈基本給部分について一定の基準で個人ごとに給与差がつくように加算する制度〉をいう。ここにいう一定の基準とは，過去のある期間(過去1ヵ年とする場合が多い)の出勤率や，技能･熟練度･必要知識･能力発揮度などを査定するために企業ごとに異なった考え方で作られる昇給率の設定法を指す。昇給制度があるために職種は変わらないのに毎年のように給与が増えるのは日本的特性であるが，昇給のうち勤務成績などに関係なく給与が増える部分を自動昇給(または最低保障としての生活昇給)と呼び，これに加算される分を査定昇給という。
