Electrical machinery is a type of machinery that is used in the electrical industry, and is used in the electrical engineering industry.

Japan's first generator was manufactured in 1883, but at the time, heavy electrical technology was advanced in Europe and the United States, so Japan had to rely on imports for both generators and motors. With the full-scale development of Japan's electric power business that began in the early 1900s and the shift to heavy and chemical industries in the Japanese economy during World War I, the heavy electrical industry made great strides.

機械工業のなかで発電機，電動機などの回転電気機械や，変圧器，整流器，開閉制御装置などの静止電気機械を開発･製造する産業。なお，重電機(重電)と電動機を使った家庭用電気機械(家電)を合わせて強電と呼び，電子機器を弱電と呼ぶこともある。
［日本における沿革］
　日本初の発電機は1883年に製造されたが，当時，重電技術は欧米が進んでいたため，発電機，電動機とも大半を輸入に頼らざるをえなかった。1900年代初頭から始まった日本の電力事業の本格化と第1次大戦期の日本経済の重化学工業化によって，重電機工業は飛躍的な発展を遂げた。
