〘 noun 〙 A silver coin used for overseas trade settlements. In Japan, the one yen silver coin stipulated by the New Currency Ordinance in 1871 was issued as a trade one yen silver coin. In 1874, the design was revised, and the following year, the weight was increased by four grains (0.256 grams), with the words "TRADE DOLLAR" written on the front and the words "trade silver" on the back. However, in 1875, it was returned to the original 416 grains, the format was changed to the same as the one revised in 1874, and it became circulated as a one yen silver coin domestically. As of April 1, 1898, its domestic use was prohibited. Of the three types above, only the one revised in 1875 contains the words "trade silver," so it is sometimes referred to as the only one called trade silver.
