A genus of jawless fish that flourished from the Silurian to Devonian periods of the Paleozoic era, it is one of the fish commonly known as armored fish. It is also called Cephalaspis. The head is covered with a hard, bony carapace, and the eyes are located close to the central midline of the carapace. There is a special sensory area around the dorsal edge of the carapace. The ventral surface of the head is covered with small movable plates, which are thought to have been used for sucking out water and the associated feeding. It is a fish adapted to a benthic lifestyle. [Ueno Teruya] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
