Born on November 11, 1933. Won first place on the balance beam at the 1954 World Championships. Placed fourth in the floor exercise at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Placed sixth in the individual all-around at the 1960 Rome Olympics. At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, he was the driving force behind the team's bronze medal win, and continued to place sixth in the individual all-around. He later coached the next generation of athletes, and in 1977 became a professor at his alma mater, Nippon Sport Science University. In 1997, he became vice president of the Japan Gymnastics Association. He is from Hiroshima Prefecture. His maiden name is Tanaka.
