Sharjah (English spelling)
In Arabic, it is called ash-Shāriqah (East). It is one of the emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates. Although the inland border is unclear, it stretches from the Persian Gulf to the central inland part of the Oman Peninsula, and has three exclaves on the Gulf coast. Its capital is Sharjah on the Persian Gulf coast, with a population of about 20,000. The emir is the Qawasim family, once famous as leaders of Gulf pirates. Sharjah is an important commercial port, a military base, and the home of the British Parliamentary Secretary. Development is concentrated in the capital, Sharjah, and ports, airports, buildings, roads, etc. are being modernized. In 1972, oil was discovered near the offshore island of Abumousa, and development is progressing. Area: 2,600 km2 . Population: 314,000 (1991 estimate).
