1866‐1950 German meteorologist. Born in Hamburg, he studied at the universities of Göttingen, Marburg, and Berlin, and joined the Prussian Meteorological Observatory in Berlin in 1890. In 1909 he became director of the geomagnetic observatory in Potsdam. On July 31, 1901, he reached an altitude of 10,800 m in a balloon with Artur Berson (1859-1943) and conducted various measurements. He conducted extensive research on clouds, and wrote Clouds in 1936. He was a co-author of Hamburg's meteorology textbook, and is also known as the editor of the specialist journal Meteorologische Zeitschrift.
