...The flower is a head of many tubular flowers with ray petals, stamens and pistils, just like chrysanthemums, and blooms intermittently from early summer to late autumn at the end of the main stem and side branches. In the 16th century, it was already cultivated by the Aztecs in Mexico, where it originated, mainly as a medicinal herb, and was called Cocoxochitl or Acocotlis. The first seeds were sent from Mexico to A.J. Cabanilles, director of the Royal Botanical Garden in Madrid, in 1789, and the semi-double flowers obtained from these seeds were given the species name pinnata the following year. ...
