938-996 Founder of the Capetian dynasty, King of France. Reigned 987-996. Son of Hugues le Grand of the House of Robert. Like his father, he was called Duke of France, but after the death of Louis V, the last Carolingian king of the West Franks, he was elected by the secular and religious princes and ascended to the French throne at Noyon. Shortly after ascending to the throne, he fought against his rival, Charles the Baptist, Duke of Lorraine, and, with the support of Adalberon, Archbishop of Rheims, secured the victory of the Capetian dynasty (991). Although the territory he ruled was limited to the Île-de-France, he formed the core of his territory around Paris and Orléans, and was exorcised and granted transcendental authority by the Archbishop of Rheims, which made him an important cornerstone of the Capetian dynasty.
