1855‐1920 British female writer. Born in the Cape Colony of South Africa as the daughter of a missionary. She traveled to England in 1881 with the manuscript of "African Farm Story," which she had written while working as a governess. The work was praised by G. Meredith and was published in 1883 to good reviews. She returned to South Africa in 1889 and married a South African politician in 1994. Her major work is "Women and Work" (1911), and she also published short pieces that deal with the issue of women's liberation in an allegorical way.
