Olive Schreiner

1855‐1920
British female writer. Born in the Cape Colony of South Africa as the daughter of a missionary. She traveled to England in 1881 with the manuscript of "African Farm Story," which she had written while working as a governess. The work was praised by G. Meredith and was published in 1883 to good reviews. She returned to South Africa in 1889 and married a South African politician in 1994. Her major work is "Women and Work" (1911), and she also published short pieces that deal with the issue of women's liberation in an allegorical way. Her theory on women was translated and introduced to Japan through the magazine "Seito."

イギリスの女性作家。宣教師の娘として南アフリカのケープ植民地に生まれる。家庭教師を務めながら書いた《アフリカ農場物語》の手稿を携えて，1881年に渡英。同作品はG.メレディスの賞賛を得て，83年に出版され好評を博した。89年南アフリカに戻り，94年同地の政治家と結婚。主著《婦人と労働》(1911)。その他寓話的に女性解放問題を扱った小品を発表。彼女の婦人論は《青鞜》誌を通じて日本にも翻訳紹介された。
