Fujiwara no Shigenori - The Tale of Fujiwara

Year of birth: 1135
A nobleman in the late Heian period. His real name was Shigenori. He was known to the world as Sakuramachi Chunagon. He was the son of Fujiwara Michinori (Shinzei) and Emperor Goshirakawa's wet nurse Ki Nii. He was ennobled in 1154. He was dismissed from his post and exiled during the Heiji Rebellion (1159), but was pardoned. He was also the husband of Taira no Kiyomori, and later became Chunagon (Senior Second Rank) and Minister of Civil Affairs. He was also an innoshu (court official) since the start of Goshirakawa's cloistered government, and in 1180 he became the innoshu (court official) and weathered the turbulent civil war period. He excelled in waka poetry, and is considered to be the author of "Tang Monogatari." He was also a man of culture who loved cherry blossoms and appreciated elegance. His daughter was Kogo no Tsubone, who is famous for "The Tale of the Heike." <References> Tsunoda Fumiei, "Heike Gosho"

平安末期の公卿。本名は成憲。世に桜町中納言といわれた。藤原通憲(信西)と後白河天皇乳母紀二位の子。久寿1(1154)年叙爵。平治の乱(1159)でいったん解官,配流されるが許され,平清盛の娘婿であったことも手伝い,のちには正二位中納言兼民部卿に至る。また後白河院政開始以来の院司で,治承4(1180)年には執事院司となり激動の内乱期を乗りきった。一方和歌に優れ,『唐物語』の作者に擬せられている。桜を好み,風雅を愛した文化人でもあった。娘に『平家物語』で名高い小督局がいる。<参考文献>角田文衛『平家後抄』
