…The British government also planned to have the colonies share the military expenses in America, and the British Parliament imposed taxes on the colonists. In 1864, a tariff on sugar (Sugar Tax Act) was imposed for the purpose of generating revenue, and in 1865, the Stamp Act was enacted on newspapers, pamphlets, and certificates. Since Parliament had never directly taxed the colonists before, this tax caused great concern among the colonists, and opposition movements arose throughout America. In October 1865, representatives from nine colonies met in New York to hold the Stamp Act Congress and protest against the mother country. In each colony, the Sons of Liberty were formed as an anti-British organization, and they took violent action, such as threatening stamp sellers to resign and implementing a boycott of British goods. …
