Agricultural rites associated with field crops. Because agriculture in Japan developed mainly around rice cultivation, field crop rites are scarce compared to rice cultivation rites, and are only recognized fragmentarily among annual events. Representative rites include the Barley New Year and Barley Home Festival, which have been held in the Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu regions, and the Millet and Millet Millet Festival, which has been held in the Kanto region. Also, August 15th is called Sweet Potato New Year, and October 10th is called Daikon New Year, which are vestiges of the harvest rites for sweet potatoes and radishes.
