An evergreen climbing tree of the Rutaceae family that can reach a height of over 10 meters. It is found in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in limestone areas. It is dioecious, with sharp downward-curving thorns on the stems and branches, and dense reddish-brown hairs at the tips of the twigs. The leathery leaves are alternate, trifoliate, and hairless. The leaflets are oblong or obovate-oblong, without petioles, 3-5 cm long, pointed at both ends, with small serrated edges, and scattered glandular dots on the underside. ミカン科のつる性の常緑樹で高さ十数mに達する。熱帯,亜熱帯地方に産し,とくに石灰岩地帯に多い。雌雄異株で茎や枝には下方に湾曲する鋭いとげがあり,小枝の先端には赤褐色の密毛がある。革質の葉は互生し,3出で毛がない。小葉は長楕円形または倒卵状長楕円形,小葉柄はなく,長さ3~5cm,両端はとがり,縁には小さい鋸歯があり,裏面には腺点を散布する。腋生(えきせい)の円錐花序は長さ5~7cm,3~10個の小さい帯黄緑色の花をつける。
