Born: October 1, 1878 in Vienna
[Died] July 8, 1950, Neustift Austrian sociologist, economist, and philosopher. He studied at the universities of Vienna, Zurich, and Tübingen, and in 1909 he became a professor at the Technical University of Brünn, and from 1919 he taught sociology and economics at the University of Vienna. He was expelled by the Nazis in 1938 and left the teaching profession thereafter. He took the position of universalism, a kind of totalitarian theory, and held that the whole precedes the parts, and that the parts are given life by the whole, and that the true state is a status state. His argument was incompatible with individualism, Marxism, and even Nazism, but was later used by Nazism. His ideological roots were in Catholicism, and he also followed the tradition of German Romanticism. His many books include "Economic Theories" (Die Haupttheorien der Volkswirtschaftslehre) (1910), "The True State" (Der wahre Staat) (21), and "Social Philosophy" (Gesellschaftsphilosophie) (28).

オーストリアの社会学者，経済学者，哲学者。ウィーン，チューリヒ，テュービンゲンの各大学に学び，1909年ブリュン工業大学教授，19年以降ウィーン大学教授として社会学，経済学を講じた。 38年ナチスに追放され，以後教壇を去った。一種の全体主義理論である普遍主義の立場を取り，全体は部分に先行し，部分は全体によって生命を与えられるとして，真の国家は身分国家であるとする。その主張は個人主義，マルクス主義，さらにはナチズムとも相いれなかったが，のちナチズムに利用された。彼の思想的根源はカトリシズムにあり，ドイツ・ローマン主義の流れもくむ。著書『経済学説』 Die Haupttheorien der Volkswirtschaftslehre (1910) ，『真正国家』 Der wahre Staat (21) ，『社会哲学』 Gesellschaftsphilosophie (28) など多数。
