Karlheinz Stockhausen

German composer and music theorist. Born in Mödrath near Cologne. After studying at the Cologne High School of Music and the University of Cologne, he studied under Messiaen in Paris. He worked in the Cologne Radio Station's electronic music studio from 1953, and served as its director from 1963 to 1973. He was a lecturer at the Darmstadt Summer School from 1957 to 1974. In 1963, he founded the Ensemble for Live Electronic Music, which was active until 1968. He was a professor of composition at the Cologne High School of Music from 1971 to 1977. Starting with musique seriale and electronic music, he expanded his creative field one after another, developing the combination of electronic music and musique concrete, the introduction of spatiality into music, open forms through the introduction of chance, live electronic music, and "intuitive music" that only dictates the mental state of the performer, becoming a leading figure in avant-garde music in the 1950s and 1960s.

Notable works include the following: His works include the completely serialist Kontrapunkte (1953) for ten instruments, Songs of the Youth (1956) for voice and electronic sounds, Piano Piece No. 11 (1956) which incorporates aleatorics, the chamber piece Zeitmarche (1956) which introduces a new concept of tempo, Gruppen (1957) which is an attempt at "spatial music" for three orchestras, Carré (1960) for four orchestras and four choirs which introduced the concept of space into music, Kontakte (1960) for electronic sounds, piano and percussion, Momente (1964) in an open form for soprano, four choirs and 13 instruments, live electronic music Mixtur (1964), and "intuitive music" such as From Seven Days (1968), For the Time to Come (1970), and Sternklang (1971). The opening section of the opera cycle "Hikari" (1977-2003), which can be considered the culmination of his work, was commissioned by the National Theatre of Japan and premiered in Tokyo as "Calendar Years - Scenes from 'Hikari'" (1977). ドイツの作曲家、音楽理論家。ケルン近郊メードラートの生まれ。ケルン高等音楽学校およびケルン大学で学んだのち、パリでメシアンに師事。1953年からケルン放送局の電子音楽スタジオで働き、63年から73年まで同スタジオの所長を務める。1957～74年ダルムシュタット夏期音楽講座の講師。1963年ライブ・エレクトロニック・ミュージックのためのアンサンブルを創設、68年まで活動した。1971～77年ケルン高等音楽学校の作曲科教授を務める。彼はミュージック・セリエルと電子音楽を出発点として、次々とその創作領域を拡大させ、電子音楽とミュージック・コンクレートとの結合、音楽への空間性の導入、偶然性の導入による開かれた形式、ライブ・エレクトロニック・ミュージック、演奏者の精神状態のみを指示する「直観音楽」などを発展させて、1950～60年代の前衛音楽の指導的存在となった。

　おもな作品として、次のものがあげられる。10の楽器のための完全セリエリスムによる『コントラプンクテ』（1953）、声と電子音による『若者たちの歌』（1956）、偶然性を取り入れた『ピアノ曲第11番』（1956）、テンポの新しい概念を導入した室内楽曲『ツァイトマーセ』（1956）、三つの管弦楽による「空間音楽」の試みである『グルッペン』（1957）、音楽に空間概念を導入した、四つの管弦楽と四つの合唱団のための『カレ』（1960）、電子音とピアノ、打楽器のための『コンタクテ』（1960）、ソプラノ、4群の合唱、13の楽器による開かれた形式の『モメンテ』（1964）、ライブ・エレクトロニック・ミュージックの『ミクストゥール』（1964）、「直観音楽」の『七つの日より』（1968）、『来るべき時のために』（1970）、『シュテルンクラング』（1971）など。彼の仕事の集大成といえる連作歌劇『光』（1977～2003）の冒頭部分は、日本の国立劇場の委嘱による『歴年――「光」からの場面』（1977）として東京で初演された。作曲理論に関する論文も多い。
