A city in the state of Saxony-Anhalt in north-central Germany. It is located on the Bode River about 30 km south of Magdeburg. Its name first appeared in historical documents in 810, and it obtained city rights in 1276 when it was transferred from the Duchy of Saxony to the Archbishopric of Magdeburg. Since 1680 it has been part of Brandenburg. Rock salt has been mined here since the early 13th century, and it became the center of potash salt mining in Germany from the mid-19th century. Chemical products, machinery, medical equipment, electronic equipment parts, etc. are also manufactured here. Population: 26,666 (1980).
