Ontsutsuji - Ontsutsuji

A large deciduous shrub of the Ericaceae family (APG classification: Ericaceae) that is 2-6 meters tall. The leaves grow in three whorls at the ends of the branches, are broad diamond-shaped, 5-8 cm long, and have short brown hairs on the undersides. As the leaves unfold in April or May, red funnel-shaped flowers measuring 4-5 cm in diameter bloom. The corolla has 5 lobes and 10 stamens. It is found in the Kii Peninsula of Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Jeju Island in Korea.

ツツジ科（APG分類：ツツジ科）の落葉大低木で、高さ2～6メートル。葉は枝先に3輪生し、広菱(こうりょう)円形、長さ5～8センチメートルで裏面に短褐毛がある。4～5月ごろ開葉とともに赤色の漏斗(ろうと)状、径4～5センチメートルの花が開く。花冠は5中裂し、雄しべは10本。本州の紀伊半島、四国、九州、朝鮮の済州(さいしゅう)島に分布する。
