This is a subtemple of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, Daitoku-ji Temple, located in Kita-ku, Kyoto City. It was built in 1566 by Miyoshi Yoshitsugu to commemorate the death of his father, Chokei. It was founded by Shorei Soso, the 107th head priest of Daitoku-ji Temple, and it is said that Sen no Rikyu and other priests also studied Zen under him. The main hall, with its gabled roof and cypress bark roof, the kanin-seki study room to the north of the main hall, and the silk-painted "Portrait of Miyoshi Chokei" are designated Important Cultural Properties. The garden in front of the main hall is said to have been created during the Momoyama period and is a scenic spot. The main hall's 32 partition paintings are the work of Kano Shōei and Kano Eitoku, father and son, and are designated national treasures. The graveyard on the temple grounds contains the graves of Chokei and the successive generations of the Sen family, including Sen no Rikyu.
