An American theologian and leader of the Unitarian movement. Born in Rhode Island. Graduated from Harvard University in 1798. In his 1819 sermon "Unitarian Christian Doctrine" in Baltimore, he opposed the doctrine of the Trinity, and in contrast to the traditional interpretation of sin (original sin), he recognized the divinity of human conscience and considered it a sin to disobey the dictates of conscience. The following year, in 1820, he founded the Liberal Pastors' Association, which developed into the American Unitarian Association in 1825. He was not only a great preacher, but also a clear writer. Many of his sermons, essays, letters, etc. are collected in The Works of William Ellery Channing . Channing's ideas had a significant influence on Emerson's Transcendentalism. The works of William Ellery Channingに多くの説教、論文、手紙等が集録されている。
