A deciduous woody creeper of the Menispermaceae family (illustration), commonly found in mountainous areas. Dioecious. Entire plant is glabrous. The leaves are alternate, kidney-shaped, with 3-7 shallow lobes, and slightly whitish undersides. The leaves are vertical. The name bat vine comes from the resemblance of the leaves to a bat. In May and June, numerous flowers bloom in panicles. There are 6 sepals and 9-10 petals arranged in a spiral. Male flowers have 20 stamens and 4-lobed anthers. Female flowers have 3-4 pistils. 山地に普通なツヅラフジ科の落葉つる性木本(イラスト)。雌雄異株。全体無毛。葉は互生,腎円形で3~7浅裂し,下面やや白色をおびる。葉は縦状。葉の形がコウモリに似ているところから,コウモリカズラの名がある。5~6月,円錐花序に多数の花をつける。萼片6枚,花弁9~10枚でらせん状に配列。雄花ではおしべ20本,葯は4裂する。雌花ではめしべ3~4本。核果は腎臓形で黒紫色に熟す。北海道,本州,四国,九州と広く分布する。
