A type of clothing for men. It is a corrupted version of the jikitotsu style used in the Kamakura period, and is said to have originated from the hensan style of priest's robes. It is a haori-like garment with plain sliding doors with both sleeves sewn shut and chrysanthemum stitching, and pleated from the waist down, and some even have a family crest. It was worn by people of low status towards the end of the Kamakura period, but from the Muromachi period it was worn by travelers and when hunting dogs. In the Edo period it became the regular wear of palanquin bearers, and was also worn by doctors, monks, Confucian scholars, painters, and tea ceremony masters. The jutoku was worn over a four-width hakama and tied with an obi. Later, like a haori, the Jūtoku came to be worn simply over a kosode garment, without the obi fastened, and this appearance was called "Hachi Jūtoku."
