Suspension

A system in which solid colloidal particles are dispersed in a liquid dispersion medium. It is also called a suspension. Muddy water containing clay is a good example of a suspension that we are familiar with. Suspended particles include particles that are much larger than colloidal particles. Sols that contain metal particles (such as Cassius purple, which is a gold colloid) are all suspensions. To create these stable suspensions, a protective colloid is usually required. For example, India ink is made up of carbon colloidal particles and glue, which acts as a protective colloid.

固相のコロイド粒子が液相の分散媒中に分散している系である。サスペンジョンともいう。粘土を含んだ濁水などは身近な懸濁液の好例である。懸濁粒子は、コロイド粒子よりもかなり大きい径のものをも含む。金属粒子を含むゾル（たとえば金のコロイドであるカシウス紫など）は、みな懸濁液である。これらの安定な懸濁液をつくるには、通常は保護コロイドが必要である。たとえば、墨汁(ぼくじゅう)などは、炭素のコロイド粒子に膠(にかわ)が保護コロイドの役割を果たしている。
