Chemical formula: HIO 3 . A pentavalent iodine compound that is always found when iodine and iodide ions are oxidized, and was discovered simultaneously by JL Gay-Lussac and H. Davy in 1813. It can be obtained by dissolving diiodine pentoxide (I 2 O 5 ) in water, or by heating iodine with about 25% concentrated perchloric acid or fuming nitric acid, or by oxidizing it with chlorine water. It can also be obtained by the double decomposition of barium iodate and sulfuric acid. It is a colorless crystal with a peculiar odor and is not hygroscopic. The heat of formation of solid iodic acid is quite large at 237.5 kJ/mol, and it is a relatively stable substance. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
