...In Southeast Asia in general, especially in gamelan in Java and Bali, highly technical heterophony has been developed in which instruments and voices consisting of many voices perform layered variations at various levels, and each voice is clearly distinguishable. Particularly notable among these is the technique called imbal in Java and kotekan in Bali, in which two players alternately play a single variation contrapuntal melody. The honte/kaede style ensemble form of Japanese jiuta and sokyoku can also be seen as a highly developed form of heterophony (Figure 3).
