This late Paleolithic human bone was excavated in 1888 from the rock shelter of Chancelade, 6 km northeast of Périgueux in the Dordogne in southern France. It was discovered by M. Hardy and others. They also brought with them cold-climate animal fossils and artifacts from the Madeleine culture. It is a nearly complete human skeleton of a middle-aged man. L. Testud, who examined it, said that the bones of the individual resembled Cro-Magnons in general, but that they resembled Eskimos in terms of their long head, large cheekbones, and thick mandibular rami. This meant that Eskimo-like humans lived in Europe during the Ice Age, and they were called the Chancelade race. However, the specimen was poorly preserved, and recent research suggests that it was misidentified and exaggerated, so the name remains merely a corner of the history of ancient human bone discoveries.
