Linden - Shinanoki

Japanese: シナノキ - しなのき
Linden - Shinanoki

A deciduous tall tree of the family Tilia (APG classification: Malvaceae). It can reach a height of 25 meters and a diameter of 1 meter. The trunk is gray-brown and the bark is split vertically. The leaves are alternate, irregularly oval, and 4-9 cm long. Flowers appear in June-August in cymes that grow downward from the leaf axils, and are pale yellow-green and fragrant. The stalks of the inflorescences are spatula-shaped and have leaf-like bracts. The fruit is a nut that is spherical, about 5 mm in diameter, and hairy. It commonly grows in mountainous areas and is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and is one of the representative tree species of Japan's temperate forests. The flowers produce fragrant nectar, making it an important nectar source. The wood is used for plywood, carving materials, boxes, etc. Fibers are extracted from the bark and used for cloth, rope, mosquito nets, fishing nets, etc. The name "family tree" is a phonetic spelling, and it is said that "shinanoki" comes from the Ainu word "shina," which means "to tie, bind."

The genus Tilia has 30 species in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere, and has long been cultivated as avenue trees in Europe and the United States, and is often sung about in poetry. The genus name Tilia comes from the Greek word tilos, which means fiber.
