A hot water bottle is a tool that is filled with hot water and placed in bed to warm the body. The word "tanpo" is said to have been adapted from the Chinese pronunciation of "yuba." It is one of the hot water compresses that has been widely used by people since ancient times as a familiar and simple method. Hot water bottles have the advantages of being able to be used by anyone anywhere because hot water, the heat source, is easily available, and that they have a gradual effect of radiating heat gradually until the water cools down, but they also have the disadvantage of not being able to adjust the temperature at any time.

中に湯を入れ，寝床などに入れて身体を温めるのに用いる道具。〈たんぽ〉の語は〈湯婆〉の唐音から転用されたものといわれる。古くから身近で簡便な方法として広く人々に用いられてきている温罨法（おんあんぽう）の一つである。　湯たんぽは，熱源である湯が容易に手に入るものであることから，だれでもが，どこでも用いることができる，湯がさめるまでの間，徐々に熱を放射して作用するという緩やかな効果があるなどの長所をもつが，温度の調節を随時できないという短所もある。
