A trading company based on the joint stock company system introduced by the Spanish Bourbon dynasty. It is also called the Guipúzcoa Company. The Spanish royal family was forced to reconsider the trade with the Indies based on the traditional floutas system, as the Dutch, French, and British made major advances into the Caribbean in the late 17th century, and as local merchants were increasingly opposed to the trade monopoly of Cadiz and Seville within Spain. The Caracas Company was founded in 1728 by merchants from Guipúzcoa (Basque Country) against this background, and was granted the right to trade directly with Venezuela, liberating the region from the smuggling of goods by the Dutch forces based in Curaçao, and contributing to the elimination of the cacao shortage in Spain.
