A vessel for holding relics. Although relics originally refer to bones or the body, they are generally used to refer to the remains of the Buddha, and are often beautiful stone pellets. The vessels are made of glass, crystal, gold, etc., and when placed in the central stone of a stupa, they are further placed in silver or copper, and are treated with great care. This is thought to be based on an ancient Indian system, and similar items have been found in China and Korea, but in Japan, particularly notable examples can be found in early temples.
