A river that flows through Gambia, the westernmost part of West Africa, and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. It originates in the Fouta Djallon Mountains in Guinea, flows northwest into Senegal, flows west through Gambia, and empties into the Atlantic Ocean at its mouth in the capital, Banjul. It is 1,120 km long. In the rainy season, ocean-going ships can travel as far as Georgetown, about 280 km from the mouth of the river, making it Gambia's main transportation route. Although the riverbanks are mostly low-lying marshes, it produces groundnuts, millet, corn, rice, and other crops. Groundnuts in particular are an important commercial crop that accounts for most of Gambia's exports. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
