Another name for hydroxypyridine. 2- and 4-hydroxypyridines are in tautomeric equilibrium between the enol form with a hydroxyl group -OH and the keto form with a carbonyl group C=O, but the equilibrium is biased toward the keto form. Those with the keto structure are called pyridones, and are called α- or γ-pyridones (2- or 4-pyridones) depending on the position of the carbonyl group. 3-Hydroxypyridine does not have a pyridone structure and exists only in the enol form. (Chemical formula) α-pyridone is a needle-shaped crystal obtained by heating pyridine with potassium hydroxide at high temperature. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
