1876‐1938 A representative novelist of Bengali literature. Born in Hugli district, West Bengal, India. Raised in poverty, he wandered around India from a young age. From 1903, he spent over 12 years in Rangoon, Burma. During this time, he established himself as a writer with several novels published in Calcutta literary magazines, and later returned to Calcutta to begin his creative endeavors. In 1921, he joined the Congress Party's civil disobedience movement, and also negotiated with various revolutionaries outside the Congress Party. In a simple style influenced by Tagore's colloquial style, he vividly portrayed poor intellectuals and women who suffered under social conventions and prejudices.
