1876‐1938
A representative novelist of Bengali literature. Born in Hugli district, West Bengal, India. Raised in poverty, he wandered around India from a young age. From 1903, he spent over 12 years in Rangoon, Burma. During this time, he established himself as a writer with several novels published in Calcutta literary magazines, and later returned to Calcutta to begin his creative endeavors. In 1921, he joined the Congress Party's civil disobedience movement, and also negotiated with various revolutionaries outside the Congress Party. In a simple style influenced by Tagore's colloquial style, he vividly portrayed poor intellectuals and women who suffered under social conventions and prejudices.

ベンガル文学を代表する小説家。インド西ベンガル州フグリ県生れ。貧困のうちに育ち，若いころからインド各地を放浪。1903年より12年あまりはビルマのラングーンで過ごす。この時期にカルカッタの文芸雑誌に載せた数編の小説で作家としての地位を確立，以後カルカッタに戻り創作活動に入る。21年からは国民会議派の不服従運動に加わり，国民会議派以外のさまざまな革命家とも交渉をもった。タゴールの口語体の影響を受けた平易な文体で，社会の因襲や偏見に苦しむ貧しいインテリ，女性の姿を生き生きと描いた。
