Japanese: 鴨方[町] - かもがた

An old town in Asakuchi County, southwest of Okayama Prefecture. Sandwiched between hills on the north and south, with a lowland in the middle, the Sanyo Main Line and the Sanyo Expressway pass through it. The main settlement, Kamokata, was once a jin'ya town for a branch of the Okayama Domain. Peaches, strawberries, and persimmons are cultivated, and the area is known for its somen noodles. It also has a sake brewing industry and is famous as the birthplace of the Bitchu Toji (master brewers). The Okayama Astrophysical Observatory of the Tokyo Astronomical Observatory is located on Mount Chikurinji. In March 2006, it merged with the towns of Kanemitsu and Yorishima in Asakuchi County to become a city, forming Asakuchi City. Area: 36.44 ^km2 . Population: 19,240 (2003).

岡山県南西部，浅口郡の旧町。南北の丘陵にはさまれ，中央に低地が開け，山陽本線，山陽自動車道が通じる。主集落鴨方はかつて岡山藩の支藩の陣屋町。モモ，イチゴ，花卉(かき)栽培を行い，そうめんを特産，酒造業も行われ備中杜氏(びっちゅうとうじ)の出身地として有名。竹林寺山に東京天文台岡山天体物理観測所がある。2006年３月，浅口郡金光町，寄島町と合併し市制，浅口市となる。36.44km²。１万9240人（2003）。
