This district is located at the northwestern edge of Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture. It faces the Edo River. It is located at the western edge of the Shimousa Plateau, and the Akedo Kofun is located on a hill about 20 meters above sea level. The name of the area comes from the fact that the provincial capital of Shimousa Province was located here, and during the Sengoku period, it was the site of two battles between the Awa Satomi clan and the Odawara Hojo clan. Since the army's field artillery regiment was relocated here during the Meiji period, anti-aircraft gun positions and an army hospital have been established here, and universities and national hospitals have been concentrated on the site, making it an educational and residential district. In the west is Satomi Park, a famous cherry blossom spot, where Kitahara Hakushu's former home, Shiensousha, has also been relocated. Adjacent to the temple is Soneiji Temple, which was protected by the Tokugawa clan, and within its grounds is the legendary Crying Stone, associated with the Satomi clan.

千葉県市川市北西端の地区。江戸川に面する。下総(しもうさ)台地の西端にあり、標高約20メートルの高台には明戸古墳(あけどこふん)もある。地名は下総国の国府が置かれたことに由来し、戦国時代には二度にわたり安房(あわ)里見(さとみ)氏と小田原北条氏の合戦場となった。明治時代に陸軍の野砲兵連隊が移駐して以来、高射砲陣地、陸軍病院なども置かれ、その跡地に大学や国立病院などが集中して文教地区、住宅地区となっている。西部にサクラの名所里見公園があり、北原白秋の旧宅紫烟草舎(しえんそうしゃ)も移築されている。隣接して徳川氏の保護を受けた総寧寺(そうねいじ)があり、境内に里見氏にちなむ伝説の夜泣石がある。
