Yoshioki Nitta
Year of death: Enbun 3/Shohei 13.10.10 (1358.11.11)
Year of birth: Gentoku 3/Genko 1 (1331)
A military commander during the Northern and Southern Courts period. Yoshisada's second son. Junior Fifth Rank, Sakonoe no Takumi. It is said that in 1337, when Kitabatake Akiie went to Kyoto to defeat Ashikaga Takauji and his allies, he joined the army and made a great contribution. After his father Yoshisada was killed in battle, he remained in the eastern provinces and played an active role on the side of the Southern Court. During the Kan'o Disturbance in 1352, he allied with Uesugi Noriaki, who supported Ashikaga Naoyoshi, and, accompanying Prince Muneyoshi, raised an army in Kozuke Province (Gunma Prefecture). He defeated the army of the deputy governor of the Utsunomiya clan, the guardian of Kozuke Province, and advanced to Musashi, then proceeded further to occupy Kamakura, and drove the Kamakura kubo Ashikaga Motouji from Kamakura. He fought fierce battles in various places in Musashi with Takauji's army, which had come east from Kinai in preparation for the decisive battle with Naoyoshi, but was defeated without any advantage and fled to Echigo. Afterwards, he carried out disruptive activities in various parts of the eastern provinces, throwing the Kamakura army into confusion. As a result, Hatakeyama Kunikiyo, the steward of the Kamakura province and governor of Musashi Province, was intent on defeating Yoshioki, and is said to have resorted to a scheme to kill him. According to the "Taiheiki," Kunikiyo ordered Takezawa Ukyo-no-jo to approach Yoshioki, and in collusion with Edo Totomi-no-kami, he assassinated him at Yaguchi Ferry on the Tama River. With Yoshioki's death, the Southern Court forces in the eastern provinces were wiped out. <References> "Fundamental Historical Materials on Nitta Yoshisada," compiled by Gunma Prefectural Education Association
