Born: July 12, 1824, Honfleur [Died] August 8, 1898. Deauville. French landscape painter. He initially worked in his father's bookstore, where he displayed his own paintings in the window. After being discovered by J. Millet, he decided to become a painter himself. He was also friends with T. Couture, G. Courbet, and C. Corot. Respecting outdoor painting, he sketched many seaside landscapes in northern France, and Corot called him the "painter of the sea." Monet studied under him as a boy, and is considered a pioneer of Impressionism. He exhibited at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, and was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1896. His major works include "The Baths at Trouville" (1869, Musee d'Orsay) and "Anchorage at Villefranche" (1896).
