Staraya Ryazan' (English spelling)

...Population: 532,000 (1993). The Ryazan Principality, which existed from around the 12th century, was an important Russian defense base against the southern steppes, and its capital, Ryazan, is today called Staraya Ryazan', and is located 50 km southeast of present-day Ryazan. Staraya Ryazan was destroyed during the Mongolian invasion of Batu in 1237, and gradually declined.
