Social drama

Social drama
A form of theatre that depicts events and the situations of the characters in relation to the social environment and social issues. This form emerged in modern times, and citizen theatre and realistic theatre often take the form of social drama. Representative works include H. Ibsen, GB Shaw, B. Brecht, M. Gorky's The Lower Depths, and A. Miller's Death of a Salesman.

劇中の出来事や登場人物のおかれる状況を,社会的環境や社会問題との関連のなかで描いた演劇。近代以降に登場した形態で,市民劇や写実劇は,しばしば社会劇の形をとる。 H.イプセンや G.B.ショーをはじめ B.ブレヒトの諸作品,M.ゴーリキーの『どん底』,A.ミラーの『セールスマンの死』などがその代表的な作品である。
