Knotweed - Knotweed

Japanese: コブナグサ - こぶなぐさ
Knotweed - Knotweed

An annual plant of the grass family (APG classification: Poaceae). The base of the culm crawls along the ground, roots emerge from the nodes, and the upper part grows diagonally upwards to a height of 20-50 cm. The leaves are ovate, clasping the stem at the base, and have bristly edges. From September to October, the plant produces palmate inflorescences consisting of 3-20 flowers at the end of the culm. Spikelets grow in pairs at the nodes of the inflorescence, but the stalk-bearing spikelets have degenerated to only have short stalks. The back of the glumes is rounded and bristly. It is commonly found in lowland fields and roadsides throughout Japan, and is also widely distributed in warm regions of Asia. Its name comes from the shape of its leaves, which resemble a small crucian carp. On Hachijo Island in Izu, it is called Hachijo Kariyasu, and is used to dye yellow Hachijo.
