Chofu

A district of Shimonoseki City in the southwest of Yamaguchi Prefecture. Formerly Chofu Town. A suburban residential area facing the Suo-Nada Sea, it also forms a coastal industrial area. National Route 2 passes through the area, and JR Sanyo Main Line's Chofu Station is located here. It is a strategic location controlling the eastern entrance to the Kanmon Straits, and was the site of the ancient Nagato provincial capital and the medieval Nagato shugosho. In the early modern period, it was a castle town of the Chofu Mori clan, whose domain included Toyoura County and had a fief of 50,000 koku, and the city area was called Fumachi. After the Meiji period, Toyoura Town was renamed Chofu Town. There are many cultural assets and historical sites, such as Iminomiya Shrine, the remains of the Nagato coin mint, the remains of Kushizaki Castle, and Kozan Temple.

山口県南西部、下関(しものせき)市の一地区。旧長府町。周防灘(すおうなだ)に面した郊外住宅地区であり、また臨海工業地を形成する。国道2号が通じ、JR山陽本線長府駅がある。関門海峡の東口を押さえる要地で、古代の長門(ながと)国府、中世の長門守護所の置かれた所。近世には豊浦(とようら)郡一帯を藩領とした長府毛利氏5万石の城下町で、市街地は府町(ふまち)と称した。明治以降、豊浦町から長府町となった。忌宮(いみのみや)神社、長門鋳銭(ちゅうせん)所跡、櫛崎(くしざき)城跡、功山(こうざん)寺などの文化財や史跡が多い。
