...The term "metaphysical poetry" was first used by W. Drummond and J. Dryden in the 17th century, and by Dr. Johnson in the 18th century, in a critical sense, such as "pedantic" and "overly intellectual." In other words, it was only given a low evaluation in the neoclassical trend of the 17th and 18th centuries, but in the Romantic era of the 19th century, a new recognition began to emerge for the "radical metaphors" that metaphysical poetry made full use of, and the strong imagination that supported them. Then, in the 20th century, a truly remarkable revival occurred, with the publication of a new version of Donne's Poems by H.J.C. Grierson (1912) and a reevaluation by T.S. Eliot (On the Metaphysical Poets, 1921). *Some terminology explanations that mention "radical metaphor" are listed below. Source | Heibonsha World Encyclopedia 2nd Edition | Information |
