It refers to theatre that is closely tied to the customs and habits unique to a certain era. As such, it takes on a wide variety of forms depending on the ethnic, national, and regional differences, making it difficult to clearly categorize it as a genre such as tragedy or comedy. For example, ancient Greek drama, Shakespeare's plays, and even the most cutting-edge avant-garde theatre today may contain elements of drama of manners. The reason they are not called drama of manners is that the customs depicted in them remain merely a backdrop. However, it is rather rare for customs themselves to be dramatized, and drama that centers around conflicts in human relationships, deeply reflects the customs of the time, and manipulates the characters, is called drama of manners.
