Japanese: イ語(彝語) - イご（英語表記）Yí yǔ

The language of the Yi people, one of the minority groups in China. It is found in three provinces, Yunnan, Sichuan, and Guizhou, and in parts of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and has about 5.5 million speakers. It was formerly called Lolo. Based on vocabulary and phonological characteristics, it is roughly divided into six dialects: northern, eastern, southern, western, southeastern, and central. In some cases, such as Nosu and Sani, the dialect name is the self-proclaimed name of the tribe. The standard language is the Xide dialect of the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province, which belongs to the northern dialect. Syllables are limited to open syllables consisting of a consonant and a vowel. In the Xide dialect, there are 43 (44) consonants, 10 vowels, and 4 tones, with a total of more than 800 distinguishable syllables.
