A general term for the Umbrian and Oscan-speaking peoples who lived in Italy in the 1st millennium BC and belonged to the Italic branch of the Indo-European language family. They moved from their original habitat in the Apennine Mountains to Latium and Campania in the 6th and 4th centuries BC, clashing with Rome, and many of them becoming allies by the mid-3rd century BC. In 91 BC, they started a war of alliances against Roman rule, and eventually became members of the Roman state. [Hirata Ryuichi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
